Nous avons vu Jason Kahn deux fois en tant que percussionniste dans le duo Repeat qu’il formait avec Toshimaru Nakamura au no-input mixing board à l’époque Pezner, en 98/99. C’est certainement un de mes plus beaux souvenirs musicaux.
Tombée il y a quelques jours sur cet enregistrement d’une de ses productions en libre accès : Jason Kahn - timelines_ny , et la partition, qui vaut le coup d’oeil, presque trop belle pour ne pas se poser la question du foutage de gueule. Mais non, vraiment pas. Le résultat relève de l’improvisation sous contrainte pour un groupe qu’il mixe en direct (pour ce concert : guitar, electronics + cracked everyday electronics + ipod’s, electronics + contrabass + percussion), c’est très délicat et très puissant à la fois.
Voilà ce qu’il dit de son travail de composition par ce type de partition, dont on peut voir d’autres exemples sur son site web :
Mes travaux graphiques de ce genre ne sont (donc) pas interchangeables, ils sont conçus dans le contexte d’une instrumentation particulière et encore plus important, pour les personnalités des musiciens qui, à l’origine, y participent. En ce sens, je considère ces travaux comme étant plus qu’un regroupement d’instruments, mais comme des situations sociales qui convoient en même temps une dynamique de groupe particulière suivant les paramètres d’une partition graphique.
Les musiciens sont libres d’interpréter les partitions comme ils le désirent. Je leur demande simplement d’adhérer à la portée dynamique indiquée et aux repères temporels pour savoir quand commencer ou arrêter de jouer.
La durée de “Timelines_NY” sert à inscrire ces travaux plus vers une idée d’environnement plutôt que de performance. Je voudrais que les joueurs aussi bien que le public, accèdent à un endroit où l’idée du temps qui passe est reléguée en arrière-plan, où l’attention se concentre sur le son, sur un continuum sans début ni fin.
Et justement, lors des concerts de Repeat au Pezner, c’est exactement ces sensations/idées qui m’avaient envahie et vraiment donné l’impression de vivre un moment exceptionnel.
